cranberry

The cranberry is unlike any other fruit in the world. In the US it plays an important role. Around the 1620’s, Americans used to mix moose meat with a paste made from this fruit to keep the meat fresh for a longer period. They also used the red juice as natural dye for rugs, blankets and clothes and believed in its anti-septic properties, using the cranberry on wounds inflicted by poisonous arrows. The cranberry is also used on traditional holidays and is a symbol of a healthy life. Its story dates back hundreds of years.

The tale has it that pilgrims served cranberries on the first Thanksgiving on Plymouth, alongside wild turkey and squash. During World War II, American troops requested around one million kilos of dried cranberries a year, as a healthy food source for soldiers.

This fruit is known by many names, but the Dutch and German colonizers brought the name cranberry, because the fruit resembles the head of the Crane bird.
